Understanding log upload add-ons for large, medium, and small storage needs

For customers who purchase logs after August 2024, the default log search retention is set to seven days.

In this doc, we will cover:
  1. For 10GB log upload requirement
  2. For 1TB log upload requirement
  3. For 500GB log upload requirement
  4. For 100GB log upload requirement
In general, the following calculation applies:
The log add-ons come with a default search retention period of seven days. To extend the retention period, you can purchase additional add-ons in multiples. For example, purchasing four 10GB log add-ons with seven-day retention will extend your retention period to 30 days.
Refer to the below explanation:
  1. 10GB logs with seven-day retention: Billed as 10GB, allowing you to upload 10GB of logs per month while retaining them for seven days from the upload date.
  2. 40GB logs with seven-day retention: Billed as 40GB, allowing you to upload 40GB of logs per month while retaining them for seven days from the upload date.
  3. 40GB logs with 30-day retention: Billed as 10GB, allowing you to upload 10GB of logs per month while retaining them for 30 days from the upload date.

120GB: 100GB add-on + 2 x 10GB add-ons
(for 10GB log uploads)

Let's consider the following use cases for log upload add-on requirements for small, medium, and large storage needs.

For 1TB log upload requirement

Use case: Assume you have purchased 1TB of log uploads. You need to retain some logs for seven days and others for 30 days. For instance, you might want to retain 500GB of application and access logs for seven days, while keeping 500GB of security logs for 30 days. You can customize retention periods for different log types using a combination of seven-day and 30-day options.

Here’s how the allowed log uploads are calculated in this scenario:
  1. Initial purchase: 1TB of log uploads
    1. 500GB logs with seven-day retention: You use up 500GB of your purchased 1TB.
    2. Remaining capacity: 500GB.
  2. For the remaining 500GB of logs:
    1. 30-day retention: You can only send 125GB of logs for 30 days with the remaining capacity.
    2. Total capacity used: 500GB (for seven days) + 125GB (for 30 days) = 625GB.
To meet your requirement of 1TB of log uploads, you need to purchase additional log add-ons. Specifically, you would need five x 100GB add-ons and two x 1TB add-ons. This would allow you to:
  1. Use 500GB of the five x 100GB add-ons for logs with seven-day retention.
  2. Use the two x 1TB of logs with 30-day retention, allowing you to upload 500GB of logs with 30-day retention.
Or, you would need three x 1TB add-ons. This would allow you to:
  1. Use 500GB of the first 1TB add-on for logs with seven-day retention.
  2. Use the remaining 500GB, along with the additional 2TB, for logs with 30-day retention, allowing you to upload 625GB of logs with 30-day retention.
Example log size and retention table for 1TB log uploads per month:

4TB: 4 x 1TB add-ons

8TB: 8 x 1TB add-ons
(for 1TB log uploads)

12TB: 12 x 1TB add-ons

To calculate the allowed log upload size for longer retention periods, divide the allowed log upload size for a seven-day retention period by two, four, eight, or 12 for retention periods of 15, 30, 60, and 90 days, respectively. Likewise, multiply the add-ons by two, four, eight, or 12 to determine the number of add-ons required for 1TB log uploads over these retention periods.
