Why are my Azure subscription monitor settings reverting repeatedly?

If the termination settings you configure on an Azure subscription monitor automatically revert to No after a few hours, this usually happens because that subscription monitor was created and is being managed by a parent Management Group monitor.

When an Azure monitor is added as a Management Group monitor, the subscription monitors underneath it are auto-created and managed by that Management Group monitor. Any setting you change directly on the subscription monitor—including termination settings—is periodically overwritten by the configuration defined on the parent Management Group monitor.

How to fix this

To make the setting change stick, update it on the Management Group monitor itself rather than on the individual subscription monitor:

  1. Go to Cloud > Azure > Overview > Accounts. The Management Group monitor will be listed here.
  2. Hover over the hamburger icon next to the Management Group monitor and click Edit.
  3. Update the termination settings (or any other setting affected) here.

Once saved, these settings are automatically applied to all subscription monitors under this Management Group.

Applying a setting to only one subscription

If you manage multiple subscriptions under a Management Group monitor and want a setting to apply to just one subscription—without it being overwritten by the Management Group's configuration—you can opt that subscription monitor out:

  1. Go to the Edit page of that specific subscription monitor (Microsoft Azure monitor type).
  2. Under the Advanced Configuration section, set Apply Management Group Monitor Settings to No.

Once this is set to No, you can configure settings independently on this subscription monitor without them being overwritten by the Management Group monitor.
